Jija Ji which means your sister’s husband is a sacred, funny, and loving character of a typical Indian family. This Character Jija Ji is son-in-law from the point of view of parents and therefore has a super-position in any family. He could be a constant source of tension if he wished to be. You have to have put up with the tantrums and idiosyncrasies of your Jija Ji however dumb he may be. You cannot afford to annoy Jija Ji because of the sensitive relationship.
Jaspal Bhatti is a typical Jija Ji in a typical Punjabi family. He is the brother-in-law of a senior bureaucrat Mr. Sandhu who is dead honest, strict and no nonsense Government officer from whom the whole department dreads. Sidhu always feels harassed by his brother-in law Jaspal Bhatti who is a lowly educated self styled social worker. Jaspal Bhatti keeps recommending to Mr. Sandhu some undeserving persons for his favour. Jaspal Bhatti at one instance asks Sandhu to reinstate a suspended officer who had been caught taking bribes red handed. When Sandhu refuses to compromise, Jaspal Bhatti kicks up fuss in the whole family that a Jija has been insulted.
Sandhu’s daughter is in love with a doctor boy. The boy’s father at one time had been a lottery seller, another funny character. When Jaspal Bhatti is asked to give his opinion about the doctor boy he opposes the marriage just for the heck of it. Savita Bhatti, Jaspal’s wife is also is fed up with his husband’s false ego. Jaspal Bhatti is such a weird hypocritical character that he always carries a card on which he has got printed ‘Jija JI, brother-in law of a senior IAS officer’.
There is another colour to Sandhu’s character. He is an unrecognized poet who writes third class poetry. He has dream of getting his book published.
There are hilarious episodes based on relationships, government working and at the same time taking digs at contemporary happenings.
